Bring them along!

So you and the family know what to look for in a new pet. Consider bringing them along to scope out the possibilities. Take a moment before you enter the premises to remind the younger ones that you're not in a petting zoo, and sometimes it isn't a good idea to touch. Remind them to always ask a grown-up in charge before they approach any pet. And above all, remind them that whining and crying will not be tolerated. Do not be swayed by teary eyes and pouty lips. A pet is a commitment. You wouldn't buy a car just because the salesman gave you puppy-eyes.

For now, think of this as just that. You're inspecting cars.

Don't fall in love with flashy colors, low prices, fast-talk, or low-mileage. Right now you're just getting a feel for what's out there, and who has the best selection. The only difference is that the test drive comes after you pay.

Quick note, you're not necessarily looking for the most pet variety-- You should already know what you want by this point. You're looking for the healthiest and happiest pets you can find. That being said, specialty stores-- Or more especially, dog breeders, for instance, are going to show you the most variety within a specific range, whereas a shelter or petstore will give you a greater variety in general, but possibly (and I can't stress that word enough) not as healthy.

Take notes on what you like about particular places, and the pets within. Are the facilities, habitats, and cages clean and well-maintained? Do the pets appear active and healthy (keep sleep-hours for nocturnal pets in mind)? Does the staff know their stuff? Also take notes on any physical features of the pets your family likes. For instance, coloration, fur length, age, vocalizations...

Now, review what everyone learned, and move on. Don't worry, you'll get there soon enough Smile
